Task 1: Vormator Challenge - Character Creation

Concept and Progression

Skyla's Character Design

Instructions

This task taught us the basics of character creation and vector graphics using Adobe Illustrator. The challenge limits us to a set of pre-defined shapes, and our goal is to create a unique character by combining and manipulating these shapes while adhering to specific rules.

Rationale

The idea of this design is to make an adorable flying character. Given the vormator shapes' limitations and the specific rules that only allow selecting, moving, and resizing shapes without altering their proportions, it was critical to maximise creativity while working within these limitations. The objective was to carefully modify the shapes to create a distinct and recognisable character design. I chose blue to convey a sense of wisdom and peace. This is enhanced by the usage of pink, which suggests warmth and relaxation, giving the character a lively and friendly attitude. These colours work together to create a balanced and appealing appearance. By combining these components, the design achieves the goal of creating a visually appealing and emotionally evocative persona while remaining within the parameters of the vormator task.

I design the character and think about it's background story to design it with it's characteristic. I have designed two character, one is Skyla which is mostly based on owl characteristic and second one is Squeeky which is mostly based on rat characteristic.

Character 1
  • Name: Skyla
  • Characteristic: Calm derneanor bird
  • Shape: Round head and round body with layered wings, overall represent a round shape
Character 2
  • Name: Squeeky
  • Characteristic: Good rat
  • Shape: Egg-shape body contributes to the character's cuteness and recognisability, overall represent a round shape

I drew out both characters and colour them using Adobe Illustrator. Then, I compare both of them and picked the better one for the submission.

Experiences

The task requires developing a unique character by combining and manipulating these shapes while adhering to specific rules. After researching, I chose to create a character with wings and the appearance of a bird, complete with an eggshell alongside him.

Observations

I struggled with this task because it was my first, and I was unsure if I could do it successfully. I had no idea what they should be, or how the outcome and e-portfolio should look. However, with the support of my tutor and friends, I am able to overcome the challenges I face.

Findings

Through this work, I discovered that designing characters is not an easy task. However, it was quite enjoyable because I learnt a lot of techniques and gained a wealth of knowledge from this work. It was an excellent experience.
