Task 2: Composition

Concept and Progression

Skyla Landscape

Instructions

In this exercise, we could choose to use the previous character designed using the vormator shape or a design a new character and develop a background story for the character.

Rasionale

Skyla is a highly advanced owl-like robot Pokemon, engineered by an illegal biology company to serve as a powerful tool of war. Created through genetic modifications, Skyla’s DNA combines traits from an owl, jellyfish, orca, and human, and is further enhanced by robotic programming. This complex blend of biology and technology gives Skyla a unique mix of organic instincts and mechanical precision.

Skyla possesses the owl’s keen vision, allowing it to spot distant targets with ease, and a semi-transparent, gelatinous body derived from jellyfish DNA, making it nearly invisible in certain environments. Enhanced with orca intelligence and human-like communication abilities, Skyla can strategize and even understand complex commands. It was designed to be an obedient, systematic “weapon with wings,” following orders with exactness and agility.

However, on the day Skyla was meant to be traded, a mysterious accident occurred. When Skyla awoke, it found itself in the lab, with no memories of its purpose and only fragments of past commands. Now free from control, Skyla roams, torn between the innate instincts of its biological heritage and the programming that urges it to find a new purpose in a world it barely understands.

References

I wanted to design a robot Pokemon. Hence, I research about robot, lab, genetic information of different organism and biotechnology.

Figure 1.2 Framed Ink Week 6 (30/10/24).

I have refer the composition of Framed Ink from this frame after receiving feedback from Mr Hafiz. I like the complex composition of this frame. It could shows a lot of information to the viewer.

Figure 1.9 Saturated Colour Tone Landscape Design Week 6 (31/10/24).

I started my design with pastel colour tone. However, after getting feedback from friends. Most of them the colour tone is too light. Hence, I try to modify the saturation of the coloursAfter modifying the colour tone of the landscape design, I think the muted colour tone is more suitable therefore I continue adding shadows and highlights on it.

Composition

Figure 2.4 Foreground of Landscape Design Week 6 (31/10/24).

In the foreground layer, I placed the character on the lab operating table, in the middle of the art board as a focal point. At the same time, there are egg shells beside the character that related to her characteristic: created through genetic modifications, combines traits from an owl and  other organism. On the top of the character, there are electrode wires, sensor wires and power cables which use to maintain and improve Skyla's functionality, allow scientists to interact with both its mechanical and biological elements.

Figure 2.5 Middleground of Landscape Design Week 6 (31/10/24).

In the midground layer, I placed cage on the left side of the art board to show the viewer that the there are animals like birds been into this lab before, to associate with the characteristic of Skyla. Then, I added the vivarium with Squeeky in it, the previous characters I designed in Task 1. On the right side of the art board, I added the lightbulb machine on the drawer to show the different of this lab from the other "normal" lab.

Figure 2.6 Background of Landscape Design Week 6 (31/10/24).

In the background layer, I drew the windows of the observation chamber with sleep soundly characters in it and the experiment room with robot hand grabbing the eggs. There is also wires and cable on the top and television on the wall that use to show the data and vital indicators of the organism. Besides that, there also a table with test tube rack with test tube on it and conical flask filled with chemicals. Lastly, there are a incubator with eggs in it and there are a display screen on it.

Reflections

Experiences

The task requires developing a unique character with a background story. After researching, I chose to create a robot-Pokemon in the lab.

Observations

The challenge I faced in this task was not familiar with the software Adobe Illustrator. Fortunately, with the help of my friend, I get to overcome the challenges.

Findings

Through this work, I discovered it was really fun to design a character and give the character a background story. There is no limit and we can design anything with our creativity and imagination. Overall, it was a fun task.
