Task 3: Illustrated Typography Poster
Concept and Progression
Illustrated Typographic Poster
Instructions
In this assignment, we must choose a "Quote of the Day"
and create a typographic
poster
that explores the art of typography as a visual and expressive
tool. This is an opportunity to experiment with typography as a
visual medium, incorporating Illustrator techniques and minor
graphical elements to enhance our message.
I have chosen "Bloom where
you're planted."
by St. Francis de Sales as my quote.
Rasionale
This poster is created with the quote: "Bloom where you are planted." – St. Francis de Sales. The original quote by Saint Francis de Sales is: "Truly, charity has no limit; for the love of God has been poured into our hearts by His Spirit dwelling in each one of us, calling us to a life of devotion and inviting us to bloom in the garden where He has planted, and directing us to radiate the beauty and spread the fragrance of His Providence." (Defender, P., 2023).
In this poster design, I have used the concept of the four seasons to convey growth and resilience. The word "bloom" is designed with contrasting colours and blooms emerging from the back, symbolising growth and transformation across different environments. The phrase "where you" is styled like building blocks to represent the process of personal development and self-construction. Meanwhile, the melting effect on the word "planted" illustrates the transitions between seasons, emphasising adaptability and continuous growth. I included a foot stepping on the word to represent personal growth, perseverance, and the steps we take to move forward in life. At the centre of the design, an image of myself holding a flower symbolises self-discovery and the act of blooming. The background transitions from top to bottom, representing the four seasons and reinforcing the idea that growth is possible at any time and in any situation.
In conclusion, this design communicates the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the beauty of personal growth, encouraging viewers to embrace their own journeys and bloom wherever life places them.

I used Illustrator techniques to
create 3D effects
for the words "Bloom," "where You," and
"Planted." Aside from that, illustrator
techniques are intertwined
with the words "where you" and "Planted".
In addition, I utilised
Illustrator's
clipping mask
technique on the letter "l" in the word "Planted"
to create texture with the tree branch
image.

Composition
In the graphic layer, I attempted to sketch the elements needed
for illustrating the four seasons. For
example, spring is represented by grass,
flowers, leaves, and butterflies; summer is
represented by a beach umbrella, sand bucket,
and sand shovel; autumn is represented by
maple leaves; and winter is represented by hot
chocolate with marshmallows.
In the photos layer, I kept the texture of the stone on the
ground and used my silhoutte image as the
background. In addition, I have emphasised
the quote and created contrast by using the
Shirakawa-go image as the background for the
word "Bloom." In order to highlight the idea
of growth in four seasons, I also included
pictures of myself, my leg, clouds,
snowflakes, and a winter plant called a snow
crocus.

Reflections
Experiences
In this project, we are require to create a poster design task is a collaboration with another module DPI. In this task, I have learned how to design a poster on my own using Photoshop for the photographs and Illustrator for typography.
Observations
The challenges I faced in this project is I needed to highlight the quotation while also ensuring that the illustrations and photographs were not plain. As a result, I see a challenge in composition because a strong composition can capture the viewer's attention and attract them.
Findings
Finally, this is a pleasant activity because we can apply our imagination to make a poster design. There is no limit or frame to our project; we can do whatever we want. I was very thrilled while working on this project. I'll apply what I learnt in this assignment to my future job. This module supplied me with a plethora of information.
