Reflections
Experience
I've learnt so much about typography over the last fourteen weeks, from designing compilations to developing fonts. Although some tasks were difficult, they pushed me to learn new skills and strengthen my design thinking. The first task is about Typographic Systems and Type & Play. I place letterforms on art boards and take elements from jellyfish to create a word font. The second task is Key Artwork and Collateral. The first exercise's purpose was to create a wordmark about ourselves, and the second exercise focused on IG design and collateral by creating an Instagram account and uploading the designs and wordmark to various products. The final task is Type Exploration & Application. I continue developing my font from the previous task in the Typography module and utilise it for font formation, font application, and Honour Standby Design.
Observation
I found that typography is more than just about choosing fonts, but also about understanding their purpose, placement, and how they interact with design elements. Through the tasks, I learnt how typography may convey mood, identity, and hierarchy. For example, while designing the jellyfish-inspired letterforms, I noticed how organic shapes may affect the mood of typography. I also noted that many storybooks or children's books lack distinctive fonts that represent the narrative tone and imagination of children, which piqued my curiosity in developing expressive typefaces in the future. In addition, while uploading my designs to the blog, I learnt how to make a digital clock that moves in real time, which provided a dynamic element to my page and helped me better grasp interactive components in typographic display.
Findings
I've realised that taking an Advanced Typography module is enjoyable and interesting. The class provided new insights, whether through technical software skills or conceptual knowledge. I discovered that typography is strongly tied to storytelling, branding, and user experience. Creating a wordmark and font about myself allowed me to reflect on my identity through design. I also learnt the value of consistency when using type across multiple media, ranging from Instagram layouts to product mockups. I'm looking forward to continuing this exploration about typography in future tasks.
