Experiences

In my first semester pursuing a Bachelor of Design in Creative Media, I have gained a wealth of knowledge about visual concepts, illustration, storytelling, art structure, composition of visual shots, and the different grounds: foreground, middle ground, and background, as well as transitions of panels in the Illustration and Visual Narrative module. Each task has provided me with new insights and experiences as I explored a lot throughout these 15 weeks, through research, progress, and completing the final work for four tasks, including character design, composition, poster, and webcomic using Adobe Illustrator.

Observations

Through these four tasks, I observed that different illustrations can deliver various messages and tell distinct stories to the viewer. Each illustration has the power to evoke specific emotions, communicate underlying themes, and convey unique perspectives. Whether through the use of colours, composition, or visual elements, every design choice shapes how the viewer interprets the story or message being presented. I realised that illustrations are not just about aesthetics; they are a form of visual language that can effectively communicate complex ideas, emotions, and narratives in a way that words alone cannot. By experimenting with different styles, techniques, and approaches, I have come to appreciate how illustration can transcend traditional storytelling, offering an immersive experience that engages the viewer on multiple levels.

Findings

Through this 15-week Illustration and Visual Narrative module, I discovered that different illustrations could deliver various messages and tell distinct stories. Each design choice, such as colours, composition, and visual elements, shapes how the viewer interprets the story. I learned that illustrations are not just about aesthetics but are a form of visual language that communicates ideas and emotions effectively. By experimenting with styles, techniques, and approaches, I gained a deeper understanding of how illustrations can offer immersive storytelling experiences, engaging viewers on multiple levels.
