Reflections

Experience

Throughout Weeks 1 to 11 of the Video & Sound Production module, I have gained a comprehensive understanding of both the technical and creative aspects of filmmaking. From learning the fundamentals of cinematography and editing simple clips like “Mints” and “Doritos,” to hands-on shooting sessions using tripods, microphones, and cameras, each week built on my skills progressively. I particularly enjoyed experimenting with shot sizes, colour correction, and sound shaping using tools like Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition, and After Effects. Despite challenges such as trimming footage precisely or crafting realistic sound effects, I found the process rewarding as it enhanced my attention to detail and storytelling ability. Collaborating with classmates, acting in scenes, and sculpting clay for stop motion further deepened my appreciation for the production process. Overall, this module not only improved my technical proficiency but also sparked greater creativity and confidence in expressing ideas visually.

Observation

Over the weeks, I observed how even the smallest details—like camera angles, lighting, or sound—play an essential role in storytelling. During in-class shooting, teamwork and planning made a significant difference in efficiency. I noticed how each team member naturally gravitated to certain roles, contributing to the group’s dynamic. Editing practice showed how pacing and rhythm affect a viewer's emotional response. From stop motion to live-action footage, each task revealed how technical and creative decisions shape the final outcome. It also became clear that continuity, both in visuals and audio, is critical for maintaining viewer immersion and professionalism.

Findings

Through these 11 weeks, I discovered how each element in video production — from camera angles to sound design — plays a vital role in shaping the audience's experience. I learned that good cinematography is not just about visuals but also about how shots convey emotion and narrative. Editing taught me the importance of timing and rhythm, while sound shaping revealed how audio can completely transform a scene’s mood. Colour correction and grading helped me understand how to enhance visual tone and mood. I also found that planning, teamwork, and technical precision are crucial in every stage of production. Overall, these findings gave me a deeper appreciation of the behind-the-scenes effort that goes into creating compelling visual stories.
